Introducing the New “Get into Rugby” Program for Little Hawks Age bracket.

The Springfield Hawks Rugby Club is excited to announce updates to our Little Hawks rugby program! Starting in 2025, we are aligning with Rugby Australia’s newly introduced “Get into Rugby” program for children aged 4-7. These changes are designed to provide a safe, fun, and development-focused introduction to rugby, giving younger players the skills and confidence they need to transition smoothly into tackle rugby at age 8.

What’s New?

1. “Get into Rugby – Walla” for Ages 4-5

Our youngest players will now take part in the Walla Rugby program, emphasizing fundamental movement and introducing core rugby skills like catching, passing, and kicking in a playful, non-contact environment.

2. “Get into Rugby – Tri Time” for Ages 6-7

Older participants will progress to Tri Time Rugby, a modified tag rugby format that includes skill refinement, small-sided games, and non-contact match play. This stage prepares them for Junior Rugby with a focus on teamwork and contact readiness.

Why Choose Tag Rugby for Young Players?

Safety and Confidence:

Tag Rugby eliminates tackling, reducing the risk of injuries while still fostering confidence in core rugby movements.

Skill Development:

Through activities like evasion games and passing drills, young players develop coordination, teamwork, and rugby-specific skills in a structured environment.

Progressive Pathway:

The program is specifically designed to transition players from non-contact games to tackle rugby. By the time participants reach U8, they will have the fundamental skills and readiness for tackle rugby.

Inclusive Fun:

Mixed-gender participation ensures an inclusive environment, with activities designed to engage players of all skill levels and abilities.

Affordable Access:

Registration costs remain low, and every participant will receive a Gilbert rugby ball and Tri Tag belt as part of their package.

What’s a Session Like?

Each 45-60 minute session includes:

Activations: Fun, movement-focused warm-up activities.

Skills Training: Drills to develop core rugby skills such as passing and evasion.

Match Play: Age-appropriate games to apply new skills in a game-like setting.

Looking Ahead

Our mission is to provide a positive first rugby experience while preparing players for future success. This update ensures the Springfield Hawks’ Little Hawks program aligns with the national vision, creating a unified pathway for young athletes.

We can’t wait to see our youngest players thriving in the new “Get into Rugby” program. Join us in fostering the next generation of rugby stars!

Exciting Developments and Achievements

The Little Hawks Program

This year, we proudly launched The Little Hawks, introducing 3–5-year-olds to rugby in a fun and supportive environment. Watching these young players embrace the sport has been a highlight for our club.

Senior Men’s Triumphs

Our senior men’s team made a proud return to the field, reaching the grand final. Although they narrowly fell to a strong Toowong side, their resilience and teamwork were a source of inspiration.

Under-12 Championship Victory

The Under-12 team, featuring many first-year players, delivered an exceptional performance, securing the division title with a decisive win over Albany Creek. This marked our first banner since COVID—a proud and historic moment for the club.

Community and Representation

This year, we welcomed many new members and saw parents step into crucial roles as coaches, mentors, and volunteers. Their dedication has created an environment where players thrive and enjoy the game.

On larger stages, our players showcased their talents with strong performances at the BJRU tournaments, the Pacific Youth Festival, and Queensland Subbies. These achievements reflected the Hawks’ determination, sportsmanship, and exceptional talent.

Rugby Club of the Year

A crowning achievement in 2024 was being named Rugby Club of the Year in Queensland by Rugby Australia, Queensland Rugby Union, and Cadbury. This prestigious award is a testament to the passion and hard work of our entire Hawks community.
